Religion, for starters, can easily bitch-slap Love until it cries like a toddler who dropped his ice cream cone. Oh sure, religion is a powerful force in people's lives. And it can create a bond that holds a relationship together in tough times. Too bad, most of the time, it just adds to your problems.

Religion is one of those subjects that comes up pretty early in most relationships and gets resolved before the relationship goes any further; you both either agree, agree to disagree, or go your separate ways. If you both agree and/or are both the same religion, everything is super. No worries. Congratulations. Have a nice life. But, if you both believe different religions, or agree to disagree, you are both kidding yourselves. When you start getting serious about each other, the holy shit will hit the fan. We're talking weddings, in-laws, children, etc. And all that shit is conflict kindling.

Surprisingly, the fights you'll have over religion are usually caused—not by the woman you're dating—but by her parents. As they get older—and closer to actually meeting their God firsthand—parents often get more rigid in their beliefs. Before you even consider marriage, you need to find out how religious her parents are. Because even if the new love of your life doesn't take her religion too seriously, your future in-laws may be card-carrying fanatics. And that will start battles that make WWII look like a cat-fight.

We're not saying that two people from different faiths shouldn't marry; just that most religions don't make it easy. And for good reason (at least, to them). If a religion lets you date someone outside that religion, you just might find that you like the other religion better, and convert. Then your old religion loses you, and more important, your money. But they're not solely concerned with losing your money. They could survive that hit.

No, religions are more worried that you won't bring up your children in their religion, and those kids represent the beginning of lost future revenues. See, if enough people stop passing the religion on to their kids, church attendance dwindles, the tithe money dries up and the religion dies out. Then the cult-leaders...er, priests, rabbis and ministers have to go get real jobs (like you). To avoid that, religious officials will resort to extremes. Even to the point of making your romantic life a living Hell on earth. Praise the deity of your choice!
